A laparoscopic procedure is much less invasive than traditional surgery. It’s often favored by doctors and patients because it’s been proven to be safer and have a much faster recovery period. Technology is also improving with time, so these surgical procedures have the most advanced equipment possible.
Several different types of gynecological issues can be treated or diagnosed using laparoscopy. The most common conditions diagnosed by gynecologic laparoscopy include:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine and/or ovarian cysts
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Uterine prolapse
- Cancer
Usually laparoscopy is used to diagnose these things when you have symptoms like chronic or severe pelvic pain or bleeding.
There are also many different gynecological procedures that are done with a laparoscope. The one that’s done most frequently is a hysterectomy. Some other procedures that are also fairly common are:
- Cyst removal
- Fibroid removal
- Tissue ablation (for endometriosis)
- Tubal ligation
- Ovary removal
