If you find yourself in the midst of a miscarriage, there can be a lot of confusion and emotion that comes with such a tragic loss. Understanding some of the causes behind it can sometimes help to begin the healing process.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, “Studies reveal that anywhere from 10-25% of all clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Chemical pregnancies may account for 50-75% of all miscarriages.”
Chemical miscarriages are those that occur almost immediately, and many times women don’t even realize they’re pregnant yet. The main reason for these is a problem with implantation due to an abnormal amount of chromosomes.
While the cause of miscarriage is often unknown, here are some possible reasons why miscarriage happens:
- Weak cervix
- Hormonal imbalances
- Uterine problems
- Harmful habits (smoking, drinking, etc.)
- Mother’s age
- Certain types of infections
If you have questions or concerns about miscarriage, talk to your obstetrician.
