What Is Nocturia and Why Is It Happening to Me?

nocturia

Does your bladder wake you up multiple times in the night?

You may have a condition called “nocturia.” Nocturia is simply a problem with your bladder either producing too much urine or an inability to hold it through the night. Sometimes it can be caused by another health issue, so it’s important to find the ultimate cause.

Common Causes of Nocturia

  • Drinking too much (particularly caffeine and alcohol)
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder infection
  • An overactive bladder
  • A sleep disorder (i.e. sleep apnea)
  • Medication
  • Diabetes
  • Age

Treatment for Nocturia

Treatment for nocturia depends largely on what the actual issue is. If you have another health issue that’s causing you to wake up in the night, your doctor will likely treat that first to see if it helps your bladder too.

There are also various medications to target your bladder activity and simple things you can try at home.

To learn more about nocturia and your treatment options, talk to your ob/gyn.
