According to author and research leader Cheryl Tan, 10% of mothers drink during the months of their pregnancy, even with the knowledge that alcohol can cause miscarriage, premature birth, or learning disabilities and delays later in life.
When a mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy, the alcohol’s particles are absorbed directly into her baby’s bloodstream. This causes the baby’s blood alcohol content to match the mother’s. Because of the baby’s small body, this alcohol is more concentrated and can’t be metabolized due to the baby’s underdeveloped organs. Exposure time increases, which can lead to serious birth defects, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or even a miscarriage.
Tan says, “There is no known safe level of alcohol that can be consumed at any time during pregnancy. All types of alcohol should be avoided, including red or white wine, beer, and liquor.”
